Years ago when you all were living on Stilmore (you were 17 or 18 then), one day your father asked me to go for a walk … he was terribly worried that you would turn out just like a certain chessplayer your father had gotten to know at the club, who I will refer to as \»B\». Your father thought I had some influence on you at the time, and wanted me to try to sway you toward computer programming or science. I told your father that I had little if any influence with you, and that in any case I could not in good conscience urge you toward programming, since I didn\’t think it was the right path for you and you yourself didn\’t seem inclined in that direction. Vladimir accepted my reply and didn\’t pursue the matter.
Now it seems his fears are being realized. B lost his father when B was in his early twenties, then for the next 15 years B did not hold any job … he was completely supported by his mother until B was 38, when B\’s mother died. [Sound familiar?] Since then, about 15 years ago, B has worked only two years, at menial wage jobs … he\’s made his other money teaching chess … his friends put him up at their homes for a few of those years, but for the past nine years or so, B has had an apartment for $500/month. He has always had trouble paying his rent [sound familiar?], and has often \’borrowed\’ money from friends to avoid eviction [\’borrowed\’ in quotes since B never has made the slightest effort to pay back the money to his friends — sound familiar?].
Now B has finally been evicted [sound familiar?], and as I write this I do not know where he is; he may well be living on the street, homeless. He has run out of friends who will lend/give him money for rent … one of the reasons being that B\’s former interest in gambling — which over the years was under control — has become a strong obsession which he cannot control. Whenever B has any money he drives to the Detroit casinos and gambles nonstop, sleeping in his car with the motor running and the window cracked open. Last winter he spent 18 days living like this … a really sick existence … lost all of his money and hung around with unsavory types … and missed his chess teaching assignments, letting down one of his best friends who owns the chess teaching company.
At 52 B has no place to live, owes friends about $10,000, has an old car which is falling apart, has no job, refuses to work, and is in the clutches of his gambling addiction. Genia, please do take a hard look at the path B chose for himself … your beloved father saw clearly that you had similar tendencies as B (who is talented in two of the arts, though that talent isn\’t anything truly special and certainly isn\’t nearly as great as B fancies it is). I urge you to make conscious choices, or you might well end up like B, which would be a great pity.
MONEY: Do not ask me for loans or gifts of money, as the answer will be \»No.\» You are healthy and can (and should) earn your own money. Giving you money would be like giving dope to a drug addict … it would only prolong the inevitable, as happened with B. In this world everyone must work or perish. Make your choice.
Further, I ask you to be completely honest … tell me, was all that talk about your having a two week job in Vegas true, or was it just to get some money from me? It sounded fishy when you were here, and from how it turned out, it looks like the story you told was an untruth, but I would like to hear your version.
And also, Genia, I ask you to be more honest about your interest in translating Pushkin. The rationale for your asking me and others for money has always been your conviction that a new translation would be extremely valuable for the world. But then when Natan offered you a room of your own plus food so you could finish the translation project in three years, you refused! On the spurious grounds (I was told) that \»Oh, I can\’t leave Princeton.\» This tells all of us that you don\’t really think the translation project is so important after all. If the project were as all-important as you tell us, you would spare no effort to complete it and would have accepted Natan\’s generous offer.
I don\’t know what is holding you in Princeton, but apparently it has enslaved you, which is always a bad thing as you must know. Just make up your mind to leave Princeton … do not allow anything or anyone to make a slave out of you!
Genia, I don\’t know whether or not we will continue our relationship … your last email [below] was the ramblings of a mind that needs something … some kind of help … it was extremely discourteous and without any basis in fact. [For example, you denigrate my writing and poetic abilities, but as far as I know you haven\’t published anything and haven\’t been paid any money for your writing or poetry or translations, whereas I\’ve been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for my work, and have had a book of my poetry published. Your statements lack all objectivity and are completely without any justification, merely your unsupported opinion based on your vast overestimation of your true abilities.
I have to tell you in this regard that three Russian friends of mine — all bright and totally bilingual — don\’t think you are too terribly talented as a Pushkin translator. In particular, none of them like your translation of the poem on love. I am not running you down, just trying to give you some honest feedback about the true level of your ability. ]
